What is the OET Exam?

The full form of OET is the Occupational English Test, which is designed to test the English language proficiency of healthcare professionals. The OET is recognized internationally by the regulatory bodies in countries like the UK, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Singapore, Dubai, etc. The OET aims to ensure that healthcare personnel has adequate English language abilities to communicate successfully with patients and colleagues.

OET is suitable for 12 healthcare professions, which are: dentistry, nursing, medicine, pharmacy, physiotherapy, veterinary science, radiography, occupational therapy, speech pathology, podiatry, optometry, and dietetics.

How is the OET scored?

The OET test evaluates 4 aspects of the English language: Listening, Speaking, Writing, and Reading. Every section of the test is based on real-world events for healthcare workers. For the listening and reading sections, you will be scored based on the number of correct answers. Likewise, as writing and speaking sections are subjective sections, at least 2 trained examiners grade them to maintain accuracy.

Additionally, in the OET grading system, you will receive a score from A to E, where A is highest, and E is lowest. You will get a score out of 500, which will be converted to the OET grading system/scale. The OET exam does not have a specific passing score. However, in most circumstances, you'll need at least a B grade on each subtest to pass. Please keep in mind that B is not an official standard.
